Houston ranks as the busiest housing market in the United States
New single-family homes are springing up like mushrooms in the greater Houston area, with the region cementing its status as the busiest housing market in the country.
Data from the National Association of Home Builders shows the Houston area granted 48,208 building permits for single-family homes in 2020. This solidifies Bayou City’s status as the No. 1 US metropolis for single-family building permits issued last year.
It is closely followed by Dallas-Fort Worth, which has issued 43,884 building permits and thus ranks second in the US overall permit. The Austin area ranked fifth overall (21,653 permits).
Despite the spate of single-family home building permits over the past year, home builders in Texas are struggling to keep up with “phenomenal demand,” said Ben Caballero, founder and CEO of Dallas-based HomesUSA.com.
